You're casually minding your business. Laying on your bed staring at the ceiling enjoying you time, and with out warning you're reminded of a mistake made yes in the past. You begin to ruminate on this thought and it won't leave you. It continues to pester you. Maybe if you ignore it, it will go away? If you deny that outcome never existed you can go back to relaxing in peace? Will repressing your memory solve your problem long term? Who knows.
